Quartararo: “A title like a boxing belt, you don’t have it for life”

“Like a boxing belt, you don’t have it for life”: after holidays between parties and training, Fabio Quartararo gets back on his machine this weekend in Silverstone (Great Britain) for the second half of the MotoGP season , well placed to “win a second title”.

Having become the first French world champion in MotoGP last year, Fabio Quartararo recounts his current season to AFP. After his two falls and his abandonment in the Netherlands at the end of June, he looks back on the five-week summer break, his physical and mental preparation and his world goal.

– Holidays: “thinking of nothing but enjoying”

“It went really well, I was able to take days off and train. I really wanted to take a week off, but I still like to do sports, in the morning or in the afternoon. But, of course, the times when you had to party with friends, I was the first to party. A week really to cut, to think of nothing but enjoying, it’s something that is really useful, very important. Also because I had the worst race of the season, two crashes, I hurt myself… So it was important to think and move on.”

– Training: “I like to push myself to the limit”

“In training, when I put myself in the red, I like it, I like to put myself at the limit. It’s my job but I don’t see it as a job, I have fun. To surpass myself , to improve physically, to see that I feel better on the bike, that’s the most important thing”.

– The body: “a lot of recovery”

“I had to do a lot of recovery in relation to my shoulder, the left. I still have a little pain. I moved my collarbone and my shoulder when I fell in the Netherlands, my ligament was swollen, I got a bruise on my shoulder, nothing very serious but several little things that accumulate and take time to recover”.

– The mind: “stay calm when you don’t want to be calm”

“It’s been almost a year and a half, two years since I went to see my psychologist, I feel that I don’t need it. On mental preparation I feel that I have made a very big + step + for two years. It is above all that: to remain calm in difficult times”.

– The brain: “not falling by having the right reflexes”

“The neurological aspect is something that I have to work on myself. The reaction time, having very quick reflexes, especially to prepare for the moments when you have to try to save falls, do the maximum so as not to fall, by having good reflexes”.

– The title: “the first title is good, but it’s in the past”

“Being champion doesn’t change anything, I’m not defending my title. I want to win another one. Last year’s title is good to have, but that’s in the past. I want one second and it would count as the first. It’s a new step. A title, like a boxing belt, you don’t have it for life”.

– The motorcycle: “go a bit further”

“We haven’t improved this weekend. Of course it’s embarrassing. If we look at the other Yamaha riders… I manage to do good things with the Yamaha but you have to manage to find solutions to go a bit further”.

– Formula 1: “I’m going to push to do a test” with Mercedes

“I was in Nice at the time so I thought I had to see this Grand Prix (in France in July, editor’s note). It was cool. I had the opportunity to get into the Mercedes , last year I was able to test their simulator, so I’m going to push a little more to do a test. I pushed with Monster (joint sponsor of Yamaha and Mercedes, editor’s note) but I think we will push with Mercedes and trying to do a day, or at least a few laps, that would be awesome. It could be something pretty cool, but I have no idea if it’s going to be possible.”
