Qualcomm integrates Snapdragon into its own flagship phone

The companies behind graphics circuits, processors and complete system circuits are relatively few, compared to the companies that use the products for their own graphics cards, computers and telephones. However, it is common for the actors who design the circuits to provide their own products, where Nvidia’s and AMD’s reference graphics cards are perhaps the clearest examples. In addition, for example, Intel creates laptop models, while Samsung and Apple use their own system circuits in various products.

Qualcomm’s system circuits for mobile devices are available in a plethora of devices signed by other manufacturers, but now the company is launching a flagship phone with Snapdragon marking. The product has the somewhat bland name “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders”, where “Snapdragon Insiders” is a membership for those who have an interest in system circuits. It is also the extra interested who will only get more information about the phone when it is soon released in the trade.

Qualcomm believes that the phone benefits from Snapdragon-specific features.

The phone shares many aesthetic and specific features with Asus’ game-oriented ROG Phone 5, and Qualcomm does not hide behind the fact that Asus is responsible for the design. The phone is a lavish story with the Snapdragon 888 5G in the center, which is accompanied by 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and 512 GB of storage. The 6.78-inch AMOLED screen has a refresh rate of 144 Hz and a resolution of 2,448 × 1,080 pixels.

On the back you can see three cameras: a wide-angle, an ultra-wide-angle and a telephoto lens with 3 × optical zoom. The trio is 16, 12 and 8 megapixels respectively, while the camera on the front is 24 megapixels. In addition, the unit’s 4,000 milliampere-hour battery can be quickly charged with the power of 65 watts and such a charger is included, along with a pair of wireless headphones. 3.5 mm connection is missing, but as usual for the top class there is 5G and Wifi 6 support.

The juicy specifications suggest a juicy price tag and according to Swedroid is this at 1,500 USD, corresponding to about 16,000 kronor including VAT. The launch is imminent in the USA, China, Great Britain and Germany, but whether the model will also land on Swedish store shelves remains to be seen. However, Qualcomm flags that it is a limited edition and the increase should therefore not be seen as a guarantee that the company will release more of its own phones in the future to focus on the system circuits.
