Putin’s statement on gas supplies to Europe became a vaccine against rising prices, – German expert

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s words about a possible increase in Russian gas supplies to Europe are a vaccine against high prices (“antipricing vaccine”), said Klaus-Dieter Maubach, Chief Executive Officer of Germany’s Uniper, during the St. Petersburg Gas Forum.

He stressed that high prices “are bad for our business, especially in the long term, and we are very happy that prices started to decline“. If on Wednesday the spot price of gas at the European TTF site approached $ 2 thousand per thousand cubic meters, now it is in the region of $ 1.2 thousand per thousand cubic meters.

In turn, the head of Gazprom Export, Elena Burmistrova, said: “Today we have gathered with colleagues in the room for speakers, and in the morning the first question was asked – what are the prices for gas today. And we saw that after the meeting with Vladimir Putin and after the statements that were made, gas prices dropped sharply. And we sighed with relief. And only in such a close connection between the producer and the consumer, this market can exist and develop further ”.

Maubach stressed that European markets will continue to depend on gas supplies, in particular on Russian gas.

“In Germany, we want to increase the share of renewable energy sources, and gas allows us to be flexible in the process of energy transition,” he added, noting that therefore the company wants to develop relations with Gazprom.

During the forum, Maubach also said that Gazprom itself must decide which way to supply gas to Europe. So he answered the question whether it is important for Russian gas to be supplied through Ukraine.

“It’s not that I care, this is the business of our partners,” he said, stressing that if Gazprom finds a new export option, that’s his business. “The main thing is for it to work, so that gas flows to Europe,” stressed the head of Uniper.
