PSD will propose to the European Parliament a common strategy to fight fires and drought

The PSD deputies will propose to the European Parliament the creation of a European strategy for issues related to drought and fires, announced this Monday the social democrat José Manuel Fernandes.

“The PSD deputies will propose a debate in plenary in the European Parliament, with a resolution, so that the issue of fires and also drought is seen in European terms, there is a European strategy for it, but after each one (countries) do your part, do your job”, said the MEP José Manuel Fernandes.

The social democrat, who was speaking at the opening session of the 18th edition of the PSD Summer University, which will take place until Sunday, in Castelo de Vide (Portalegre), regretted that the Portuguese Government did not use the financial resources at its disposal. for these areas. “In Portugal, if there is something that is not lacking, it is financial resources, but if you look at the funds and the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the forest, it is zero”, he criticized.

The PSD MEP also accused the Government of having managed to achieve “non-imputability”, discarding responsibilities in relation to the fire in Serra da Estrela.

The 18th edition of the PSD Summer University runs until Sunday, in a traditional initiative of the Social Democrats that did not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The young people’s political training initiative will have the most media attention at the conference dinners: on Tuesday, the speaker will be the former president of the CDS-PP Assunção Cristas, the following day the former PSD leader Luís Marques Mendes, on Thursday, the socialist and president of the Economic and Social Council Francisco Assis, on Friday the president of the Lisbon City Council Carlos Moedas and on Saturday the councilor of state and president of the Champalimaud Leonor Beleza Foundation.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will also participate remotely in the initiative, answering, by video, 30 questions from 30 participants, after having done the same in 2018, but in writing.

Among the guests of this edition, there are also three vice-presidents of the PSD: the MEP Paulo Rangel, who is a regular presence at the initiative and will speak on European topics, and the ‘deputies’ Margarida Balseiro Lopes and Inês Palma Ramalho.

The latter will participate in a panel with former minister Miguel Poiares Maduro with the theme “Portugal: New Inequalities”.

Among the ‘teachers’ throughout the week in Castelo de Vide are the former Secretary of State José Eduardo Martins, the former Secretary of State and director of the Geneva Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Mónica Ferro, economist Luís Filipe Reis, university professor Raquel Vaz Pinto or political commentator Sebastião Bugalho.

The closing of the Summer University is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00, with interventions by Alexandre Poço, Carlos Coelho and Luís Montenegro.

In this edition, a hundred young people (chosen from almost 300 candidates) will participate, with classes on economics, political science, health, communication or international relations, in a group that should be “the youngest ever because there are many candidates in the order of 20 years”, according to Carlos Coelho.

This will be the second high point for the PSD this summer, after Luís Montenegro revived the traditional Festa do Pontal, in mid-August, in Quarteira, which was attended by former party leader Pedro Passos Coelho.
