Průša comes with its largest 3D printer Original Prusa XL and launches pre-orders

The world-famous manufacturer of 3D printers Josef Průša introduced to the world his largest printer Original Prusa XL. It uses the CoreXY concept and offers a print area of 36 × 36 × 36 cm. It will reach customers next year.

The Prusa family of printers is expanding with the third full member. The medium-sized i3 MK3S + has been joined by the smaller mini-brother Mini + and now also the long-awaited model XL. With its axis concept, it differs slightly from the previous models of the Czech manufacturer.

Construction and bed

Prusa XL uses the CoreXY design. The extruder therefore moves in two axes, the large and heavy bed then vertically. As a result, the creators did not have to deal with the inertia of a large and heavy heated pad during rapid movement.

The pad is heated by a total of 16 segments measuring 9 × 9 cm, which can be controlled individually. In practice, this solution reduces bending during heating and at the same time saves energy. The total area for printing is 36 × 36 × 36 cm.

Nextruder

The printer uses a direct-drive extruder nicknamed Nextruder. There is a hidden load cell sensor in it, thanks to which the printer should be able to print the perfect first layer. Specifically, the sensor is located in the aluminum part of the heatsink and allows you to measure stress in the entire heatsink. The resulting solution can calculate the ideal height of the first layer regardless of the printing substrate.

The sensor can also detect a completely or partially clogged nozzle and detect whether the printed object has detached from the substrate. The Nextruder works with a large gear in a ratio of 20: 1. Everything is covered by new electronics, stepper motor drivers and easily accessible connectors.

Tool changer and other functions

More demanding printers will certainly be interested in the tool changer. The XL can be expanded with up to five independent tools that are stored in the tray at the side of the printer. Tool change is automatic and extremely accurate thanks to electromagnets and other active elements. It also makes full use of the calibration functions through the load cell sensor. Thanks to the sensors, the printer can detect a successful tool change and the software from Průša will fully support the tool change when released.

The printer also has integrated string holders built to weigh 2-3 kg. The makers also mention a cover that provides draft protection, which should make it easier to print with certain temperature-sensitive materials. You can control the printer through the new LCD screen. The printing pads are still magnetically attached.

Price and availability

3D printers from Průša are among the more expensive ones. However, you pay extra for quality, support and we can also enjoy the fact that it is a Czech product. However, the XL model is not so expensive due to the competition in the given segment.
