Promise of eternity – Renault Trafic 2.0 dCi L2H1 (2008) used car – Auto-Motor

A family story follows, as this commercial vehicle in the strict sense of the word happened to be in our yard because of my older son’s sports. Robi is 8 years old, he started off-road riding in 2020, and last year he got his first own machine, a Husqvarna TC50 cross racing machine. The tasks to be solved also started here, because as previously the Yamaha PW50 belonged to the motorcycle school and was delivered by them, now we had to solve the transport together with the accessories ourselves. An intensive, but by no means hasty search followed, with tips and experienced advice from familiar partners in addition to familiar portals – buy this, don’t buy that, this is good for this, that is for that. The circle became narrower, specifically the Nissan Primastar – Opel Vivaro – Renault Trafic design twins were in the crosshairs, then came the data collection of targeted advertisements and a few personal visits. The scale quickly tips towards the L2 version with a longer wheelbase, which is therefore much more practical: the passenger cabin is separated from the cargo area, which is spacious enough to absorb the necessary things, and even my motocross machine (Suzuki RM 125) can fit in it. .

The sliding door access to the back row is practical, the seats are fixed here. On both sides, there are cargo pockets with bays and 2-2 large bottle drink holders. Since it is listed as a 6-seater in both the pedigree and the type certificate, it is expected that a double mother-in-law seat will be included. The bottom of the cargo space is protected by a custom-made OSB sheet, and the wall separating the passenger compartment is covered with plexiglass. The tabs in the corners come in handy for fixing

The solution was hidden in a small village in Veszprém County, and what is surprising is that it was not in one of the busiest online classified ads, but rather in a give-and-take page for household and business goods. My colleague Gergely Lővei and I went around and looked at it, then tried the Trafik, and since all the desired parameters were correct (nice aesthetic condition, “unbreakable” chain motor, air conditioning, navigation), the deal was sealed. I already drove the 14-year-old double-cabin van home from Bakony.

Leaks before disassembly. The problem was remedied by replacing the shimming rings and a new gasket in the transmission housing. The factory clutch mechanism is already in place, and of course the thrust bearing is also new. The pedal feel is as soft as a passenger car, and the gearbox can be switched precisely

The fact that it was not the workhorse of labor brigades for 292,000 kilometers was already likable at the first meeting. Like its exterior, the cabin is also in attractive condition, so you don’t have to compromise with a diesel-smelling, plaster-stained vehicle. After warm-up, it started relatively easily, drove in a straight line, did not pull to the side when braking, but the experiences of the first weeks were exhausted in the diagnostics behind the steering wheel. I originally planned to change the operating fluids (engine and transmission oil, brake fluid, coolant) as well as the filters, but since the elegant Trafic has endeared itself to the family members, my service thoughts took me deeper. Not knowing the details of the car’s technical history, I decided to leave the more “delicate” parts to the past for the sake of reliable use, so Trafic ended up in the hands of Ákos Nyéki in Balassagyarmat.

The handbrake “circle” of the right rear brake cylinder did not work, the cable rotted. The solution was a complete replacement. The housing of the air pipe between the charge air cooler and the turbocharger was cracked, where some of the pressure was lost. In addition to the engine support and gearbox support brackets, the stabilizer bar and the rubber seals on it are also new. New handbrake cable, rear brake caliper, disc, master cylinder and shock absorber. The steps of the Trafic have become noticeably finer, the handbrake grips like a soldier

We agreed on the replacement of the complete control, injection heads, EGR valve and clutch mechanism, as well as the renovation of the air conditioning compressor, but it was revealed that the weak parking brake and the knocking and creaking sounds on the shakier road surface also needed to be fixed. The car was practically disassembled, engine-transmission unit lowered and pulled apart, radiator, air conditioner, front and rear chassis and brakes, handbrake cable, wheel bearings. It’s a nice little list, with a few more bits added, from engine mounts and various gaskets to the stabilizer bar to the slotted oil pipe, as well as a couple of components that needed to be replaced during the assembly stage. An example of this is the plate cover on the side of the motor control, here a new part is needed to avoid gaps. The sequence of operations was completed by chassis adjustment and brake performance measurement, and the project, like me, filled the car with peace of mind, thanks to noise- and smoke-free operation. The technical exam due next spring will be a routine task…

The M9R engine
The 1,995 cc, common-pipe turbodiesel block is a joint development of Nissan and Renault from 2006, with piezo-electric injectors and a particulate filter. It was available in several power levels (114, 150, 175 hp) and, like the Trafic, was also installed in the Megane and the Laguna.
