Toyota Motor Manufacturing France (TMMF) has started production of the Yaris Cross, a brand new, compact, urban SUV whose sales in Europe will begin in August.
A significant amount of 400 million euros was invested to enable the production of two models on the same production line in that factory – the 4th generation Yaris and the completely new Yaris Cross model – which increased the annual production capacity of TMMF to 300,000 vehicles.
This B-segment SUV has been designed and developed to meet the needs of European customers in this market segment, and the expected engine offering for the new Yaris Cross will largely include a hybrid version with low CO2 emissions, according to the brand’s plans for a 90% share of electrified variants by 2025 .
The Yaris Cross is the second model to be based on Toyota’s GA-B platform for compact cars, as well as the 8th model covered by Toyota’s new New Global Architecture (TNGA) to be produced in Europe *. The start of its production also marks another step in the direction of Toyota’s local production strategy.
Marvin Cooke, executive vice president of manufacturing, points out:
“The introduction of the Yaris Cross is important because it not only contributes to Toyota’s competitiveness, but also strengthens our strategy of localizing production and reaching maximum production capacity aimed at Toyota’s goal of increasing sales in Europe to 1.5 million vehicles by 2025.”
Toyota’s vision for European localization has been further expanded this year as Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) began production of hybrid electric transmissions and electric motors, providing a 1.5-liter TNGA petrol engine and a fully hybrid powertrain for the Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross models.
Toyota has also invested in increasing the capacity and modernizing its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) plant to produce the new generation Yaris, which was named Car of the Year 2021, in response to significantly increased demand.
With the launch of the Yaris Cross, the total number of TMMF employees has been increased to almost 5,000.
