PRODUCTION OF ECOLOGICAL PELLETS FROM INDUSTRIAL HEMP

For 12 years, the Hemp team has been working on processing and returning industrial hemp to fields in Serbia. This team, consisting of three PhDs and two people with a master’s degree, came up with the idea of starting the production of energy ecological pellets from this plant in the coming period.

As they themselves say, the idea arose from the research and implementation of two projects related to industrial hemp, which relate to market research and the justification of growing and processing industrial hemp, which was supported by the Development Agency of Serbia in 2012.

One member of the team is also the owner of a small patent for an energy-ecological pellet made from the stem of industrial hemp obtained from the Institute for Intellectual Property of the Republic of Serbia.

According to their explanation, the project affects the reduction of CO2 emissions, because the energy they patented belongs to renewable energy sources with zero CO2 emissions.

During its growth, during the four months from planting to ripening, industrial hemp absorbs more than seven times more CO2 from the air than any other plant species.. On the other hand, when burning pellets (with an incredible 97% degree of useful effect), a very small amount of CO2 is released, significantly less than the amount of CO2 absorbed during plant growth. So this project ensures the future in terms of energy while preserving the environment.

Team Hemp currently has three associations, one cooperative and a company Grass which works on the processing of flowers and seeds into cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations. Their plan is to realize a zero series of pellets in the future for its commercialization, for which they will need a decorticator, service pelleting and final physico-chemical laboratory testing in accordance with European standards.
