A fourth case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the country. This is the first case of a medical worker who was infected while taking a patient’s sample, and was infected in Korea rather than imported.

The Central Defense Countermeasures Headquarters (Bangdaebon) announced on the 22nd that the medical staff in the isolation ward where the third confirmed patient was hospitalized for examination was confirmed that day.

According to Bang Dae-bon, this patient was classified as a high-risk contact after being stabbed with a needle while taking a skin lesion sample from the third patient on the 14th and was under active surveillance.

He was vaccinated against monkeypox immediately after receiving the accident, but on the morning of the same day, skin lesions developed at the site of the cut, so a genetic test was performed on the isolation ward and it was confirmed positive.

Currently, the confirmed person has mild systemic symptoms such as headaches, but the Bang Dae-bon explains that they are in good overall condition. They will receive treatment at the hospital where they are in quarantine until the quarantine is lifted.

There was no history of monkeypox vaccination prior to the needle prick, authorities added.

The third monkeypox patient this patient came in contact with was a Korean who arrived from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this month.

The quarantine authorities announced on the 16th that as a result of the epidemiological investigation after the third patient, 7 high-risk contacts, including cohabitants, 9 medium-risk contacts, and 42 low-risk contacts on the 26th floor were confirmed as contacts. This fourth patient was one of seven high-risk contacts.

The first and second patients, who came out on June 22 and September 3, respectively, were also Koreans who returned from overseas (Europe), so this is the first case of infection in Korea.

Bang Dae-bon asked medical staff to wear safe protective gear when treating patients suspected of monkeypox, and to actively cooperate in pre-vaccination in preparation for patient treatment.
