dr. Endah Citraresmi, Sp.A(K) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, said that eating high-fiber vegetables and fruits has been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of allergies in children.

Endah said that children who suffer from allergies have less number and diversity of gastrointestinal microbiota than children who do not suffer from allergies. For this reason, in order to avoid dysbiosis or imbalance in the composition and function of the gastrointestinal microbiota, children must get adequate fiber intake.
“We know that there are good bacteria and pathogenic bacteria that cause illness. We want the good bacteria to dominate in our intestines. So, we have to feed the good bacteria,” Endah added.
Prebiotics will be used to support the growth and survival of probiotics or good bacteria in the digestive tract. The end result, is the production of short chain fatty acids consisting of three important components namely butyrate, acetate, and propionate.
“Butyrate not only works in the intestines, but also enters blood vessels and other organs and then works as a signal to communicate with the brain and regulate the immune system and inflammation. This has something to do with allergic diseases,” said Endah.

“Therefore, for children who have allergies, parents must be able to choose the right type of food and do not contain substances that cause allergies, keep their nutritional intake balanced and can also be given fiber-fortified food or drinks,” he concluded.
