President Zeman has appointed Petr Fiala as the new Prime Minister

The appointment was originally scheduled for Friday, but the president was taken to hospital after his infection and canceled his program.

Zeman was sitting in a wheelchair at the appointment in the glass area, where he was brought in by workers dressed in protective clothing. He communicated with Fiala through a microphone and speakers. The ceremony was also attended by the President’s Chancellor Vratislav Mynář and the director of the castle protocol, Vladimír Kruliš.

Zeman plans to begin a series of meetings with ministerial candidates on Monday, as he had planned before being tested positively for coronavirus. He will accept the candidates in alphabetical order, he would like to end the meetings by December 13. Then it will be possible to prepare the appointment of the entire government, the president said after the appointment of Fiala as prime minister. Zeman had previously announced that he would like to meet with Pirate President Ivan Bartoš on Monday. Fiala wants the government to take over in mid-December.

Fiala thanked Zeman for his appointment, given the complexity of the situation in which the Czechia finds itself. “I am convinced that we will soon have a government that is strong and stable, we have a binding mandate to the citizens,” the new prime minister said. He promised to do everything in his power to make the cabinet a government of change for the future. “In order for the government to take this country through the difficult current situation,” he said, adding that he believed in good cooperation with the president.

The appointment of the leader of the Spolu coalition as the new prime minister took place seven weeks after the parliamentary elections, in which the Spolu (ODS, TOP 09 and KDU-ČSL) and Pirates constituencies won 108 seats in the 200-member lower house. Fiala and the entire cabinet would like to take over the government in mid-December at the latest. Until then, the cabinet in resignation of Andrej Babiš (YES) will have government responsibility.
