President of Botswana infected with covid-19
Botswana’s President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, is in quarantine after testing positive for covid-19, the country’s authorities announced on Monday.
The diagnosis was confirmed after a “routine test” carried out on the President, according to the government’s Communications secretariat.
“The President has no symptoms and will continue to be closely monitored by his doctors,” the statement added, which does not specify when the positive test was performed.
To date, Botswana, a southern African country, has reported around 219,000 cases of virus infection and 2,444 deaths. Botswana and South Africa were the first countries to detect the new Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
