After watching the movie “Toma”, when you manage to gather yourself from the story of a little big man whose life was woven of love and sorrow and who died together with the country in which he was born, understand why the movie “Toma” by Dragan Bjelogrlić had to be shown at the end of the Sarajevo Film Festival, just before the official premiere at the Film Meetings in Nis, and you realize that the cinema distribution officially began on September 15 in Belgrade, thirty years after the great bohemian Toma Zdravković left us.
A singer who all his life “followed” the advice of Mike Antić that life should be spent like a big bill, at once, and not to be crushed.
It turned out, after tonight’s premiere in Novi Sad at the Cineplex Arena, that the entire film crew, from the signatories of the script Nikola Pejaković, Dragan Bjelogrlić, Zoran Lisinac and Maja Todorović, to the direction signed by Dragan Bjelogrlić and Zoran Lisinac, music composed by Željko Joksimović, to the acting team, four of which have already received significant awards (Tsar Konstantin to Milan Marić for the title role) , Empress Teodora Tamari Dragičević for the role of Silvana Armenulić, and Sanja Marković and Andrija Kuzmanović for episodic roles), also did nothing “small” in this film.
For the readers of Danas, Milan Marić confirmed that tonight, that everything was “done from the stomach”.
“We dealt with Tom’s story from the inside. We didn’t want to imitate. We wanted to build a living man, which was mostly my task, which I set for myself. OK, Toma Zdravković is a living man, everyone has an attitude about him, they knew him or listened to his music in taverns, the younger ones now listen to his songs. That’s why we knew that imitation would not be good in any sense. I tried to weave a little of my soul into it through some tasks that I recognized in him as a person. In order for him to be alive on that canvas as well, to be a man and not an imitation of Tomo Zdravković. This is my Tom. We all took some risk, some intuition, we let ourselves “work with our stomachs”. A lot of things happened spontaneously and then we recognized that it was the right thing to do “, said Milan Marić, emphasizing that a film can be made that way, so that first you let emotion, intuition and stomach work, and the ratio goes after all that. ”. For this film, it turned out to be the real key, to do just that, from the stomach.
This was also confirmed by the actress Tamara Dragičević, who masterfully played the legendary Silvana Armenulić, but she did not stand out from the others because no one stood out in this film. All the actors, which is almost impossible in any film, were masterful. This kind of synergy between the actors is really rare and that is what simply pours your emotions even more into an already deep enough emotional story, full of spirit and mental weight. And the story of Silvana and Tomi is a story of unreserved support that there is so little among people today.
“Silvana was really special. I didn’t know much about her before and then, of course, because of the role, I started studying her life and tried to penetrate her soul, her look, the song. Even when she sang happier songs, there was a set in her voice, she had some weight in her emotion, something similar to what Tom had. The two of them somehow did everything with their souls, and that happened to us as well. Somehow the whole team did this with a soul. I guess out of some strong responsibility towards them, we all worked with heart and soul. It doesn’t happen very often “, said Tamara Dragičević tonight in Novi Sad.
Visibly satisfied, Dragan Bjelogrlić was also in the mood to comment on the film.
“Usually, biographical films are made in our country about politicians or historical figures, and this is a story about a little man. And just as I talked in Montevideo about little people that many have forgotten about, so here I wanted to tell the story of Tomi Zdravković. I wanted to encourage other people with their achievements to pay attention to such people who had themselves and thus marked the time in which they lived. Yesterday, I heard that a movie about Jay is being prepared. Here, in the film, we told the story of Silvana as well. In general, I think that it is the privilege of great nations when you can tell stories about small people, and not just about some people who influenced historical events, “said Bjelogrlic.
The last concert in Yugoslavia, Toma Zdravković held in Sarajevo, in Skenderija, in 1991, where he sang with Davorin Popović and Kemal Montena “for all that is not and will never be again”. What a legendary trio, what a scene, how artists know and feel when the moment comes after which nothing is the same anymore.
This film is also a great story about friendship, almost unrealistically told in the relationship between the doctor who treated Tom Zdravković. Really wonderful.
The audience came out crying, with a sad smile. If the whole creative team “coincided” like that, there is no chance that this film will “not coincide” with the audience. There are many reasons for this.
Should we, when the film has now entered cinemas, emphasize at all that tonight in Novi Sad, even the rain was falling a little. Tomo Zdravković’s song “It was raining” was just an “introductory” for getting to know the love of a married couple in the film, as well as for the birth of friendship between the doctor and Tomo. So the rain waited shyly for the audience on the street, so who wouldn’t remember Tom’s verses from that song “Street as long as my sorrow”…
This movie will be shown for months, but you don’t have to wait. One should immediately, as Mika taught Tom, take the big thing, not the little things.
