Potential security holes in the popular Clubhouse app

The popular chat app Clubhouse may have had security holes that could have been exploited by Chinese authorities.

This is stated in a report by the American university Stanford’s Internet observatory (SIO), a group led by Facebook’s former security chief Alex Stamos. Clubhouse states that the changes will be made in the app.

According to SIO, it is all about that part of Clubhouse – currently the most popular Iphone app in several countries, including Sweden, Norway and Japan – is based on a structure developed by the partly Chinese company Agora. Whether the Shanghai-based company, which also has offices in the United States, has thus received unencrypted information about the app’s approximately six million users and whether that information could be accessed by Chinese authorities is unclear.

Clubhouse states that it does not save any searchable conversations, but that calls or users who have committed abuse can be tracked. It is unclear how and in what way that type of call is stored.

In a statement, the company behind Clubhouse, Alpha Exploration, says it intends to prevent “Clubhouse users from pinging servers in China” and that an external security company will be hired to review the planned changes to the service.

In China, where Facebook and Twitter, among other things, have been shut down for a long time, Clubhouse was blocked just under a week ago.
