Portugal has called on the British to join the European digital ID system

Britain removed Portugal from the quarantine-free green list last week because of the growing number of coronavirus infections and the risk posed by the virus variants identified in Portugal. Portugal was on the green list a few weeks earlier, but Britons returning from Portugal on Tuesday will have to go into 10-day quarantine and do two Covid-19 tests.

“We cannot tolerate this unstable system and the changes every three weeks,” Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa told reporters. “This is not good for holiday planners, nor for tourism that wants to organize the reception of tourists properly,” he added.

Costa said it would be a good solution for Britain to join the system of digital security certificates that the European Union wants to introduce from 1 July.

Under this system, EU citizens who can prove that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19, have had a negative coronavirus test or recovered from the disease are free to travel within the European Union.

In Portugal, the number of people infected has risen slightly since the quarantine restrictions were lifted in May. Few patients are cared for in hospital, and there have been no new deaths a day since almost all vulnerable elderly people have been vaccinated. According to the Portuguese Institute of Public Health, 612 new infections have been reported in the last 24 hours, more than half of them from the Lisbon region and the Tagus river valley. The number of active cases is 23,715, 265 people are cared for in hospitals, 52 of them in the intensive care unit.
