Popocatepetl volcano disrupts Mexico City airports

As AP notes, volcanic ash is especially dangerous for aviation, not so much because it reduces visibility, but because it can act as an abrasive and damage the fuselage and wings of the aircraft, clog engines.

Popocatepetl woke up in 1994 – since then he regularly spews toxic fumes, ash and pieces of red-hot rock. The next phase of activity began a couple of days ago. The Mexican authorities issued a warning about a possible “ash fall” in the vicinity of the volcano, primarily Mexico City (the country’s capital is located just 72 kilometers from it).

Residents of the region, and this is about 25 million people, are recommended to cover all water tanks in order to avoid clogging them, close the doors of the window, if possible, do not go out, but if you walk, close your nose and mouth. Schools have been suspended.

Interestingly, the Mexican authorities have installed several cameras and sensors on top of the volcano, which collect information about the situation in Popocatepetl around the clock in order to warn the population in time about the impending ash cloud.
