Pope in Kazakhstan meets religions for peace

From this Wednesday until Thursday, more than 100 delegations of religious leaders from 60 countries, in addition to Pope Francis, will meet in the capital of Kazakhstan to invoke the gift of peace and dialogue on “the role of religions in the spiritual and social development of humanity after the pandemic”.

This Wednesday morning’s program begins with a moment of joint prayer, in silence and, shortly after, the Pope delivers his speech.

This congress takes place every three years and was inspired by the visit that John Paul II made to Kazakhstan, 21 years ago, in September 2001, a few days after the attack on the twin towers in New York.

It is based on this “spirit of Assisi”, valued this Tuesday by Pope Francis himself in his address to the authorities, that this 7th Congress is now taking place, for the first time, in the presence of a Pope.

In addition to the speeches, Francis will have private meetings, the list of these meetings has not been released, but it is already known that the great absentee is Kirill, the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

Also during the afternoon of this Wednesday, and despite the cold, Francisco will celebrate mass outdoors, next to the facilities of the World Expo 2017, with capacity for 10 thousand people.

Here, Catholics make up only 1% of the population, but other communities from neighboring countries are expected to be present, especially Catholics from Russia and Central Asia.
