Suara.com – The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (Badan POM) revealed two types of smallpox vaccine (smallpox) used in Indonesia has the potential to prevent transmission of monkeypox (monkeypox).
In a Hearing Meeting (RDP) at Commission IX today, Tuesday (30/8/2022), Head of the POM Penny K. Lukito explained that its use is still in the clinical trial stage.
“Vaccine Monkeypox currently available internationally are the Jynneos and Smallpox vaccines and can be used, but through expanded access clinical trials,” he said as quoted by ANTARA.
The Jynneos vaccine for adults was approved for emergency use (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) in 2019, the European Mefivines Agency (EMA) on 22 July 2022, Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on 5 August 2022, and Health Canada on November 12, 2020.
While the Smallpox vaccine consists of Dryvax as the first generation, ACAM1000 and ACAM2000 as the second generation.
In the third generation, the Smallpox vaccine consists of Modified vaccinia Ankara produced by Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) with the trademark Imvanex in Europe, Imvamune in Canada, and Jynneos in the United States.
Japan also produces a third generation Smallpox vaccine under the name LC16m8 by Kaketsuken.
“Although 85 percent of the Smallpox vaccine has been effective against Monkepox, the access can be done through expanded access clinical trials,” he said.
Penny said Monkeypox and Smallpox vaccines have not yet been registered in Indonesia. The smallpox vaccine available in Indonesia is a type of varicella (chickenpox) for chickenpox.
