Awami League nominated candidate Advocate Azmat Ulla Khan voted in Gazipur City Corporation election at Darus Salam Madrasa Center on Arichpur Mosque Road in Tongir at around 9:15 am on Thursday.

Zayeda Khatun, mother of former mayor of Gazipur City, Jahangir Alam, cast her vote at Kanaya Government Primary School center after 10 am. At that time his son Jahangir Alam also voted.

According to the EC, the Magistrate has ordered the detention of one person named Abu Taher for three days for influencing the voting in center number 103 of Gazipur City. EC ordered to take action against him after observing the CCTV footage from Dhaka. Besides, a person named Riyaz has been detained at the 101 center. The EC said they were detained for entering secret rooms and influencing voting.

At around 11:00 in the morning, Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir said, ‘We are seeing on the CCTV cameras that the polling is taking place with discipline. The reports we have received from those who are in law enforcement and those who have been sent as observers from the EC know that voting is going well. No bad news yet.’

When asked about EVM and CCTV cameras not working, he said, ‘Since EVM is a machine… sometimes it malfunctions. It could be. Arrangements have been made to fix the problem as soon as it occurs. After 5-10 minutes everyone can vote again.’

Polling was held in 480 centers of the city corporation. 333 candidates took part in the election. Among them, there are 8 candidates for the post of mayor, 246 candidates for the post of general councilor and 79 candidates for the post of reserved ward councilor. Besides, one candidate was elected unopposed in general ward.

In the 57 wards of the city, the total number of voters in this election of this city is 11 lakh 79 thousand 463 people. Among them, there are 5 lakh 92 thousand 747 male voters, 5 lakh 86 thousand 698 female voters and 18 third gender (transgender) voters.
