Such news comes to us from the originators of the Future Mars Life competition.
The Ideacity colony project won the most prestigious Gold Winner title, meanwhile the base concept called Dome was awarded the Winner title. But it is not everything. Such high positions allowed our students to present their works at the prestigious exhibition on the exploration of Mars.
Nowadays in China, the mysterious Red Planet is in the tongues of the entire society, thanks to the government’s first independent exploration rover mission to this globe. The Middle Kingdom will not stop there. In subsequent missions, he wants to take samples and deliver them to Earth for more detailed research. A plan to colonize the planet is also being developed.
And here our students can come to the rescue, whose work can become a reality thanks to the Chinese government, which is looking for the most thoughtful and practical concepts. “We are glad that our projects have been appreciated even in China, especially since the local space sector is developing dynamically. It is a great honor for us, taking into account the number of competition entries and their level.“- said Justyna Pelc, the leader of the Innspace team.
The Dome design is based on shape memory materials. The concept uses a significant daily temperature amplitude on Mars, which reaches several dozen degrees. Under the influence of temperature changes over the course of the day, the petal-shaped parts of the dome bend towards the center of the base, giving access to natural light and at the same time creating a dome that allows for additional space protected against radiation.
At night, the petals return to their place and become an additional layer that insulates the interior of the base against low temperatures at night. On the inside of the petals there are flexible solar panels that provide energy, and the very movement of the petals causes the panels to self-clean from Martian dust. The project was selected among the top 300 concepts.
The second project is a Martian city for 1,000 inhabitants called Ideacity, which won the 5th place in the Mars Colony Prize competition. The Ideacity project uses the concept of an ideal city. The main assumptions of the city are short distances (the colony is on a hexagonal plan with a side of 400 m). Buildings intended for everyday use were located closer to the center, while industrial buildings were located on the outside of the city. Most of the buildings are underground, which will protect the inhabitants from radiation. The project was awarded the Gold Winner title and is one of the top 32 concepts in 6 categories.
