The police operation at the school in Uvalde, Texas, where an armed man killed 19 students and two teachers in May, was a “pathetic failure”.

This is what the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Steven McCraw, said Tuesday at a hearing in the Texas Senate.

Police had enough officers at the school to be able to stop the perpetrator, three minutes after he entered the school building, McCraw explains.

But law enforcement waited an hour to enter the school, Robb Elementary School.

“Three minutes after the suspect entered the western building, there were enough armed officers with bulletproof vests to isolate, distract and neutralize the suspect,” McCraw said.

“The only thing that stopped the dedicated officers in the hallway from entering rooms 111 and 112 was the task force leader, who decided to put the lives of the officers above the lives of the children.”

The police’s hesitant efforts have triggered great anger among parents of the victims of the school shooting.

“There is compelling evidence that the police effort in the attack on Robb Elementary was a pathetic failure and contrary to everything we have learned,” McCraw said.

The chief of police for the schools in Uvalde, Pete Arredondo, has previously explained that he did not consider himself the task leader. He has defended himself against the massive criticism, saying he did not order officers to hold back.

Parents of some of the killed children and other residents of Uvalde demanded during a heated meeting of the school board on Monday, according to ABC News, that Arredondo resign.
