Poles want to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. Required consents on the way – NeeWS

Although vaccination is the most effective method we know of today to combat the coronavirus pandemic, it still raises a lot of controversy, leading to a point where many outlets have vaccines available but lacking those willing to take advantage of them. Soon, these free doses may start to be used by children, because as it turns out, many parents expressed such a desire – as we learn from the United Surveys poll commissioned by “Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” and RMF FM, as much as 68.7 percent. of Poles surveyed would decide to vaccinate their own children against COVID-19 if it was possible. What’s more, vaccine companies are doing the necessary research, and regulatory authorities are slowly starting to issue permits.

Yesterday, Health Minister Adam Niedzielski announced that from May 17, people aged 16 and 17 will be able to register for the COVID-19 vaccination with Pfizer / BioNTech, because, as it is worth noting, it is the only vaccine that has a target group of 16+ from the very beginning. However, this is only the beginning, because the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the administration of this preparation also in the 12-15 age group and (Pfizer also conducts research in an even lower age group), so certificates from other organizations are only a matter of time. Pfizer filed the relevant applications in early April after very promising tests that showed the development of high immunity in this group with no serious side effects and no Covid-19 disease.

The Americans have not yet decided how they will distribute vaccines to this group, but emphasize that vaccination of it is very important to build herd immunity and contain the coronavirus pandemic. “The approval of the vaccine for younger people is a critical step in continuing to reduce the enormous public health burden of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Because although children are less likely to get Covid-19 than adults, they are not immune to it, and we hear more and more about serious cases and deaths also in this group, and moreover, they can pass Covid-19 asymptomatically and transmit the virus to older family members.

Polish specialists are of a similar opinion, Wojciech Feleszko – pediatrician and immunologist from the Medical University of Warsaw, presented four reasons why it is worth encouraging young people to vaccinate in TVN24: – The first reason is the social transmission of the virus, also among adults who for one reason or another they could not be vaccinated or they did not respond to the vaccine. The second reason is that children can become very ill too. Third, some of these patients develop POCV, which is also a very serious disease. The fourth reason is that the virus replicating in society threatens that new variants may arise in other countries, so we cannot afford to let this population of children be a reservoir that will transfer this virus to adults in a slightly changed form through teachers, he explained.
