Double surprise at Suzuki. Not only the Japanese manufacturer takes advantage of this early summer 2020 to unveil a new and unexpected SUV, but in addition it looks … like the RAV4. It is even a clone of the SUV Toyota !
Plagiarism? No, because the two Japanese manufacturers agreed in March 2019 to collaborate to produce and generalize large-scale electrified vehicles. As part of this cooperation, Suzuki must notably share its compact vehicle platform in order to allow Toyota to build two small cars for India. For its part, Toyota has committed to supplying Suzuki with two new electrified vehicles for Europe, by reusing the platform of the RAV4 and Corolla. The first of these two vehicles is therefore the Across.
A “suzukiesque” face
Copy and paste from RAV4, this 4.63m long SUV stands out from the crowd thanks to a revised front panel, to show off the brand’s identity with three diamonds. We thus find a large hexagonal honeycomb grille above which obviously sits the stylized “S” of Suzuki. The Across also adopts tapered projectors and a redesigned shield with larger air intakes.
For the rest, no change. The rear and interior are identical. On board, there is also a 9 inch central touch screen (compatible with Apple CarPlay for iPhone, Android Auto and MirrorLink).
Toyota’s plug-in hybrid
Unsurprisingly, the technique is again the same since the Suzuki model uses the plug-in hybrid engine of the Toyota vehicle. On the program therefore: a four-cylinder 2.5L atmospheric petrol of 185 hp and two electric motors (182 hp at the front and 54 hp at the rear) for a total power of 306 horses sent to all four wheels (electronic all-wheel drive E -Four) via an E-CVT automatic gearbox.
An 18.1 kW lithium-ion battery, mounted under the floor, offers an all-electric range of approximately 75 km (WLTP). Suzuki also claims CO2 emissions of only 22g / km.
Launch in fall 2020
Available in six colors (White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Sensual Red Mica, Gray Metallic and Dark Blue Mica), the Suzuki Across is to be launched in Europe in autumn 2020. Its price has not yet been announced but it should be under the € 61,500 that the Toyota RAV4 PHEV is asking for.
