Sony has unveiled specific software update plans for the Playstation 5. In a week, the ability to turn on a variable refresh rate, which will be supported by a handful of games, will be unlocked.
Until recently, the variable refresh rate (VRR) was mainly a matter for computers and smartphones. The new generation of consoles will also boast this feature. Sony VRR will unlock support this week with a software update. Within a few weeks, many of the following games will also receive patches that unlock this feature.
- Astro’s Playroom
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- DIRT 5
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Resident Evil Village
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Tribes of Midgard
VRR can also be enforced on games that do not yet support the feature. However, there may be minor issues.
Sony recalls that VRR will add to the enjoyment of gaming thanks to lower response and better fluidity. It also adds that the variable refresh rate is only available when connected via HDMI 2.1 to a compatible TV. The resulting effect may vary not only depending on the TV, but also the games and their settings.
