The heavy rains on Sunday caused a lot of drama, especially in the Podravje area. The authorities are still assessing the damage caused.

We have already reported that Sunday’s rains caused flooding of rivers and torrents across the country. But this was far from the only trouble brought by the wet Sunday, because the ground was also moving. Especially in the area of Podravje, many landslides were triggered, and the authorities are still collecting data on the damage caused by flooded areas and landslides that threaten several buildings.

Such dramatic images, captured by a member of Meteoinfo Slovenija’s team of amateur weathermen, come from Orešje near Ptuj. There, a large landslide slid into the vineyard. As explained by Meteoinfo Slovenia, 108 mm of rain fell over this area, which caused the watercourses to rise sharply, the ground is very wet, which contributes to many landslides. They also warned that the risk of triggering landslides will also be present in “in the coming days, especially on Tuesday, when we expect another heavy shipment of precipitation.”

Meanwhile, the Administration for Protection and Rescue reports on numerous avalanches in the north-east of Slovenia. Firefighters and workers of the road company in the area of the municipality of Cirkulane also dealt with avalanches. There, in the settlement of Gradišča, two roads collapsed with a total length of 80 meters.

The local firefighters had to intervene in Jablance in the Duplek municipality, where the soggy soil was creeping, which consequently ate away part of the road.

A landslide threatened a residential building in the village of Zamušani in the municipality of Gorišnica. Firefighters from PGD Zamušani covered the 150 square meter avalanche with foil and thus prevented further sliding. Firefighters also repaired the landslide that threatened the house in the area of the municipality of Lenart. The same thing happened in the area of the municipality of Majšperk. A road collapse also occurred in the village of Strmec pri Leskovac in the municipality of the municipality of Videm.

In the Maribor Regional Information Center, eight events were recorded in the area of the Maribor Municipality. Landslides or waterlogged soil, one of which threatened the house, was partially repaired and covered with foil by the firefighters of JZ GB Maribor. Firefighters from PGD Kamnica also intervened. It was no different in the area of the municipality of Ruše, where a 25 by 15 meter avalanche was triggered due to the wet terrain on the Kurirska poti. The latter threatened the workshop next to the apartment building, and the road was also closed due to the landslide. Firefighters from the PGD Ruše protected the avalanche, and the deputy commander of civil protection of the municipality of Ruše was present at the scene, who took over further procedures.

Two events were recorded in the area of the municipality of Slovenska Bistrica. Firefighters from PGD Zgornja Bistrica and Zgornja Polskava intervened. It is also worth mentioning the triggering of landslides in the area of the municipalities of Sveta Trojica in Slovenske gorice, Šentilj in Slovenske gorice and Sveti Andraž in Slovenske gorice. Especially in the area of Šentilje, it was dramatic. Due to the wet terrain, there were two landslides that threatened residential buildings and a local road. In both cases, the firefighters of PGD Šentilj in Slovenske Gorice covered the wet soil and diverted storm water away from the building. One of the buildings is at great risk due to the landslide, so the four residents were temporarily moved to another location.
