Prague – The coalition cabinet of Petr Fiala (ODS) will rule with the confidence of the Chamber of Deputies. Deputies decided on her statement today, more than three months after the elections last October. The vote was preceded by a roughly 21-hour debate dominated by critics from the opposition camp.

In the lower house, the government of all 106 deputies present was supported by five coalition parties, ie the ODS, STAN, KDU-ČSL, TOP 09 and Pirates. 87 lawmakers present from the pair of opposition movements YES and SPD opposed the cabinet. Seven deputies apologized for health reasons, two of them from the coalition camp and five from the opposition camp.

The votes of an absolute majority of the deputies present are sufficient to express confidence in the government. Today, the cabinet needed to get at least 97.

Jan Farský, the former chairman of the STAN faction, also voted in favor of the government, postponing the planned departure for a six-month internship in the United States. Pavel Staněk (ODS) and Hana Naiclerová (STAN), on the other hand, apologized for the illness from the coalition. Milan Feranec, Josef Kott, Jiří Mašek, Milan Wenzl (all YES) and Radek Koten (SPD) were not present from the opposition for the same reason.

The deputies voted in alphabetical order after the names of the People’s Party Aleš Dufek, who was determined by the lottery first. Today’s deputies’ vote of confidence in Fiala’s cabinet took place on the 96th day after the parliamentary elections.

Fiala’s government has 18 members, three more than the former YES and CSSD cabinet of Andrej Babiš (ANO). The government has new ministers for legislation, the European Union and science, research and innovation. The ODS has five ministers, STAN four, Pirates and KDU-ČSL three and TOP 09 two.
