People call scammers themselves and willingly part with money. This is ingenuity!

Positive Technologies, a cyber threat company, told about new tricks of telephone scammers. If earlier they called potential victims, now more and more often they get the victim to call them herself. The logic is as follows: when a person himself performs any actions on his own initiative, it is much easier to get into his trust and deceive him.

There are several ways to get the victim to call:

  • Blank call with call reset
  • SMS-message allegedly from a bank with a request to call back the call-center
  • An e-mail with a notification about the imminent expiration of a trial subscription to any service with a phone number, by calling which you can unsubscribe

Banks are partly to blame for the prevalence of these schemes, which advised not to communicate with strangers on financial topics by phone, but to call back to the call center of the organization from which they are allegedly calling. To give the appearance that a person is calling the bank, scammers resort to answering machines and voice assistants who connect with the employee to resolve the issue. Then well-established schemes are used – for example, blocking a suspicious transfer and the need to transfer money to a secure account (in fact, the account of fraudsters).

However, there is an improvement in money withdrawal schemes. Recently, several cases were recorded when fraudsters posing as bank employees asked customers to install an updated version of a mobile application, and then theft was carried out through this application.

All fraudulent schemes have one thing in common – the victim himself makes contact, and the more willingly she does it, the easier it is for her to part with her money.
