Answering the question at the daily press conference about the words of Hulusi Akar, the Minister of National Defense, that Turkey can ensure the security of Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport if the conditions are met, Kirby stated that he was not aware of these statements but that he had talks with Ankara on this issue.

Kirby said, “We have ongoing discussions with Turkish leaders about their plans to provide security for the airport. Obviously, this is a decision that President Erdogan should make and we respect that, but of course we had some preliminary discussions, and as we have said in general terms before, security at the airport, which “Whatever way it may be, it will be important for not only the United States but also other nations to maintain their diplomatic presence in Kabul.”

Minister Akar used the following statements in his statement on Tuesday:

“We are talking to the Americans about Afghanistan. We spoke at the NATO Defense Ministers Meeting on Tuesday, it is spoken between the Americans and the delegations. We have the intention to stay in Afghanistan depending on the conditions. What are our conditions? Political, financial and logistical support. Otherwise, we can stay at Hamid Karzai International Airport. We are waiting for the answer about our conditions. However, the Afghan people are our brothers. The goal is to ensure peace in Afghanistan. We have historical brotherhood. We want to stay in Afghanistan as long as the Afghan people want and be able to help.”

The USA made an agreement with the Taliban in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on February 29, 2020, and promised to withdraw all its troops from Afghanistan on May 1, in accordance with the agreement.

US President Joe Biden, who took over the post on January 20, 2021, announced on May 1 that it was not possible to withdraw completely, and then ordered the withdrawal of all American soldiers in the country until the anniversary of September 11th.

According to data from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) Command, 50 percent of the withdrawal has been completed.
