PCI-SIG has completed the PCIe 6.0 bus specification

Already last October, the so-called Final Draft of the PCIe 6.0 specification was published, on the basis of which manufacturers could already start developing their hardware, as it will automatically support the actual final version of the specifications, which has been published just yesterday.

This is again a doubling of the throughput of individual lines, already at 64 GT / s, ie a full sixteen lines of the still very widespread PCIe 3.0 interface can replace only two lines of the new interface, which will ensure pulse amplitude modulation PAM-4, which we know well mainly thanks to the GDDR6X memories on modern NVIDIA Ampere cards, ie it is a modulation transmitting two bits at once due to the fact that it can acquire four states at one time. However, it is all the more difficult to ensure signal integrity and filter out errors, which will be helped by the Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) and FEC (Forward Error Correction), which aims to ensure very low latency and increase the efficiency of data transfers. And then we also have the new L0p power-saving modes.

We can expect that the implementation of PCIe 6.0 will bring higher costs, but today we still hardly have support for PCIe 5.0, which even in the case of ordinary PCs there is no way to use, because there are no graphics cards or SSDs, in short, nothing but support this interface within the Intel Alder Lake platform.

PCIe 6.0 is still to be used only in the field of high-performance server hardware, ie in HPC or AI / ML, data warehouses with extremely powerful SSDs are also considered, and automotive, aerospace, military technology and the Internet of Things have also been named.

But there is still time for PCIe 6.0 in terms of support from Intel and AMD, whose platforms in the server area still dominate. The upcoming Intel Sapphire Rapids will still support PCIe 5.0, and this also applies to the future AMD EPYC Genoa (Zen 4), which should come on the market even later. At best, the first swallow could appear next year.
