Particularly scratch-resistant: Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro in the test

The Galaxy Watch 5 comes in two sizes, 40 and 44 millimeters. The larger variant in our test starts at 329 euros. The Watch 5 Pro (rear) is available from 469 euros.

Pro
  • high-quality titanium case (Watch 5 Pro)
  • high-quality aluminum housing (Watch 5)
  • scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
  • high-contrast and bright OLED
  • ECG, blood pressure, body fat measurement
  • Stress and sleep tracking including snoring recording
  • WearOS with a large selection of apps
  • fast system and well thought-out menu navigation
  • Outdoor features like GPX route import and Track Back (Watch 5 Pro)
  • high charging speed

Contra
  • Blood pressure and ECG can only be measured with Samsung phones
  • wears thick on the wrist (Watch 5 Pro)

Conclusion

Samsung delivers reliably, as you are used to from the market leader. However, the Pro version did not convince us as much, because it hardly differs functionally from the Watch 5, but is thicker and more expensive. We would therefore always recommend the Watch 5, which is clearly one of the best Android smartwatches you can buy right now. connect rating: Galaxy Watch 5: very good (437 out of 500 points), Galaxy Watch 5 Pro: very good (437 out of 500 points)

It is understandable that Samsung does not offer an iOS app and thus leaves iPhone owners out in the cold, because anyone who has an iPhone will most likely buy an Apple Watch. However, the fact that blood pressure measurement and ECG, two premium functions of the new smartwatches, are only accessible via Galaxy smartphones (via the “Health Monitor” app) puts consumers and other manufacturers at a disadvantage.

Samsung justifies this with health certifications, but it is more likely that they want to lure customers into their own hardware ecosystem. This leaves a bland aftertaste in an otherwise successful product presentation. The new Smartwatch generation Watch 5 shows once again that the move to Google Wear OS that took place with the Watch 4 was the right one. Google’s operating system ensures a maximum variety of apps and good compatibility with all Google services.

The look is particularly simple

The Watch 5 is available in two sizes (40 and 44 millimeters), the aluminum case is available in five colors. All variants are sold with either LTE and eSIM, the surcharge is 50 euros. The small version offers excellent wearing comfort, you can hardly feel the watch on your arm. The 44 millimeter variant used for this test is also comfortable to wear.

The Watch 5 Pro takes some getting used to, the weight is significantly higher, but above all the body protrudes powerfully at 15 millimeters on the wrist. This is also due to the fact that the display frame is not smooth like on the Watch 5, but is more than a millimeter above the display.

The OLED is therefore in a recess and is particularly well protected. Another special feature is the supplied plastic bracelet without holes, with which a continuous adjustment of the bracelet circumference is possible. The case is made of titanium, so it’s even more elegant than that of the Watch 5. This also applies to the sapphire glass, which according to Samsung has a higher degree of hardness.

The feel and workmanship of all watch models are first class. The design, on the other hand, only convinced us with the Watch 5, where the flat body with the almost borderless display conveys a modern look. Samsung tries the same design language with the Pro, but it doesn’t come into its own here due to the more massive body. The neutral-sterile look doesn’t offend anyone, but it also looks a bit clumsy and boring.

All models are protected against penetrating water up to five ATM – so a short dive is not a problem, but smartwatches are only really suitable for swimming from ten ATM.

Technology and sensors top

The OLEDs are again of top quality, colors, luminosity and contrast yield are convincing across the board. I also like the user guidance. With the Exynos W920, Samsung relies on the same SoC as last year, but the performance is still completely sufficient in 2022, the system reacts quickly and smoothly to inputs. The BioActive sensor on the underside is also familiar from the Watch 4. However, Samsung has changed its surface so that the contact point with the skin is larger. As our test shows, this leads to somewhat more precise measurement results.

A new addition is an infrared-based skin temperature sensor, which will only be activated at a later date via an update. The control via touch gestures and two physical buttons is very mature. The digital bezel also contributes to this, with which you can quickly scroll through the menus using gestures on the edge of the display. With 16 GB, the memory is large enough to record longer Spotify playlists.

The crux with the battery life

With every smartwatch, the question arises as to how close the connection to the smartphone should be. There are watches like the Apple Watch and the Galaxy Watch, which act as an extension of the smartphone and are in constant communication – with the Watch 5 you can make calls or carry out actions using a voice assistant (Bixby, Google). However, the tight connection leads to a short battery life, which is far from what less smart watches (Garmin Fenix) achieve. Even the Watch 5 Pro, in which Samsung emphasizes the large battery, gives up after 1.5 to two days if you activate the AoD and permanent SPO2 recording.

The large Watch 5 manages about 1.5 days, which in practice results in a daily charging routine. The sleep tracking, the functionality of which has been expanded with the Watch 5, is only possible if you take off the smartwatch every day. It is practical that Samsung has increased the charging speed to ten watts, reducing the charging time to 1.5 hours.

So nobody has to switch from the Watch 4 to the Watch 5, the differences are too small. But if you are looking for a versatile smartwatch with a good price-performance ratio, you will find it.

Galaxy Watch 5 Pro offers little added value

With GPS functions such as Track Back and GPX route import (via the Samsung Health app), the Watch 5 Pro is once again aimed specifically at outdoor fans. It is obvious that Samsung has the target group in mind that is primarily served by Garmin. However, we do not see any reasons to switch from Garmin to Samsung. On the one hand, Garmin has been offering offboard navigation for its outdoor smartwatches for years, while Samsung is absolutely dependent on the smartphone (offboard navigation should be possible later in the year with a major Wear OS update). On the other hand, the runtime of the Watch 5 Pro is too short for longer outdoor trips, especially in direct comparison with Garmin, despite the relatively large battery.

All in all, the Watch 5 Pro only offers little added value. Functionally, it hardly differs from the Watch 5, but it is thicker and more expensive. We would therefore always recommend the Watch 5, which is clearly one of the best Android smartwatches you can buy right now.
