Panel mayor Mahbub was injured in the attack in Cox’s Bazar

Sources said that a month ago, the Cox’s Bazar Municipality issued 500 new Tomtom (Easy Bike) licenses to operate in Cox’s Bazar town, but for the last fortnight, the police have been detaining the new license holder Tomtom, calling him ‘illegal’. About 300 such tomtoms have already been detained and kept in police lines.
The affected tomtom owners called for a tomtom strike in the city on Wednesday and staged a protest in front of the municipality office.

The Federation of Shop Owners’ Associations also went on strike in protest of the incident.
A case has been filed in the police station against 15-20 people including former district BCL leader and president of Tomtom Malik-Sramik Samiti Ruhul Quader Manik and 3 people including the main accused Manik have been arrested, said OC Sheikh Munirul Gias.
He said accused Manik was being treated in police custody. He was also injured in the incident. Besides, two more accused named Abdul Hamid and Mohammad Musa have been arrested.
Cox’s Bazar Municipality Panel Mayor-2 Helal Uddin Kabir said the strike that was started in protest of the attack on Cox’s Bazar Municipality Panel Mayor-1 Mahbubur Rahman Chowdhury has been called off.
It was decided to withdraw the ongoing strike in Cox’s Bazar Municipality after arresting 3 people including the main culprit of the incident. As a result, all regular civic services and other activities of Cox’s Bazar Municipality will continue normally from Thursday.
