“It is important that the PAN maintain an attitude that, being constructive, does not allow itself to be cornered to the left or to the right, and does not renounce its autonomy to please would-be political bosses. It is important that the PAN, as a pivotal party, continue to to be able to build bridges to achieve advances in the causes, that does not become a party of the system, that does not institutionalize itself, that is, that does not normalize the discourse, that does not corrupt its programmatic lines by sweetening them”, he defended. The spokesman, who is leaving the party leadership, also considered that “the PAN will continue to make a difference in society and politics”, as “it retains all the conditions to continue asserting itself as a differentiating, autonomous party, progressive and that does not allow itself to be conditioned by the simplistic and reductive dichotomy of left/right”.
“The causes of the PAN cut across society and are bigger than any ideological drawer and than any person or personal project. The PAN will continue to be a beacon of progressivism and the hope of non-believers in traditional politics, with a stamp activist, with disruptive proposals but that translate the spirit of a political project worthy of the 21st century”, he argued, also advocating that the party “is able to continue the successful path it has had so far, since it has a strong party collective and with ample space for intervention ensured by elected representatives at different levels of power”.
In his speech at the opening of the VIII Congress of the PAN, taking place in Tomar, in the district of Santarém, the leader indicated that today he is leaving all party leadership positions and resigning from the mandate of deputy, returning to the “base affiliated condition”, decision it announced in March.
Leaving “deep gratitude to each of the people who make up this wonderful and promising collective for the incredible last seven years” of his leadership, the spokesman said that he “intensely lived the PAN’s goals” and tried to “do the most” of the “the way I knew better”.
“I tried to learn from the mistakes I made. The time has come to change my life not only to take full advantage of all that I have given up on a personal level in these years, but also because I am a staunch supporter of the principle of term limitation and I understand that in a democracy healthy people should not perpetuate themselves in political positions, they should give opportunities to other people,” he said. And he guaranteed that he will continue, “albeit in a different way”, in the “front line of defense” of the PAN.
André Silva also pointed out that the PAN declared itself “sailing in the sea of controversy” and considered that the party will consolidate itself “by using the force of prejudice and the interests of opponents”.
“Where are the voices that said we only cared about animals? They are silenced, because our work speaks louder,” he said, after highlighting the party’s achievements in recent years.
At the end of the intervention, André Silva received a standing ovation by the delegates, as they shouted “Long live the PAN”.
