Painting old tiles – the most favorable solution for bathroom renovation

How to save when renovating an apartment? Instead of replacing old ceramics, you can simply paint it. Watch a video of how it’s done!

Renovating a bathroom is not a cheap thing. In one of the previous articles, we wrote that it carries the highest cost when renovating an apartment. However, there are tricks that can reduce this amount. Of course, if you roll up your sleeves!

By painting ceramics with special colors you will get a one-color surface, and you can choose the color from the tone chart with a large number of shades. It will even be embossed if the tile has a texture. Don’t be afraid that the paint will come off! If you paint the ceramics according to the manufacturer’s instructions and with the right colors, they will last a very long time. Just follow the procedure below.

See how old tiles are painted:

We painted the beige granite ceramics white, and we painted the bright red polished tile blue.

What is very good about specialized paints is the fact that they have excellent covering power. We tested it on granite rough ceramic as well as polished in bright red. We wanted to check whether the base color will penetrate, that is, whether the covering power of the paint is so good.

We start with testing: We painted beige granite ceramics in white, and bright red polished in a blue tone.

Required material for painting

  • mohair roller
  • small brush
  • sandpaper granulation P120
  • Temadur paint, thinner and herter (hardener) – purchased as a coloring set
  • templates optional

Floor tiles need to be prepared first – this is a very important phase. For starters them sand with P120 granulation (maybe P100, ie any rougher). After sanding, ceramics clean with thinner (price about 100 din).

If you do not do this, that is, if they are not sanded well and cleaned, the paint will be less attached to the surface of the tile. Therefore, cover each tile in detail to make the color more consistent.

You need a small one to paint the ceramics mohair roller (roller is 60, handle 75 dinars) and small brush as needed.

The painting set consists of paint in the selected shade, thinner and herter. Before painting, it is obligatory to sand the ceramics. Photo:

The tiles are painted with Temadur paint in two layers at intervals of 3-4 hours.

When the tiles are prepared, they are they paint Temadur with paint in two coats u at intervals of 3-4h. One set for painting ceramics contains Temadur paint, herter and thinner for paint and one set covers up to 5m2 of tiles in two layers.

He paints in a bucket mixed with diluent and with herter and is evenly applied to the tile with a mohair roller. After painting in the first layer, it is necessary to wait about 3 to 4 hours before applying the second layer.

When the second layer is dry (in 3-4 hours), that is, you will be able to walk on the painted floor, you can decorate the tiles by applying paint in a different color with the help of a template.

When you are completely done painting and decorating the tiles, wait 3-7 dana before you start bringing in hard stuff because this is it color ripening period on ceramics.

The paint is resistant to water, rain, snow, UV rays and strong household chemicals, so it is suitable for decorating both indoor floors and outdoor covered and uncovered terraces.

The ceramic painting set should contain paint, herter and paint thinner and cover up to 5m2 of floor. Basic set of white paint can be purchased at prices from 2,500 din (for 5m2 of ceramics in two layers). In the salon Auto Duga it is possible to tint the color in any tone with ton card.

Pattern patterns… for those with patience

If one-color tiles are not interesting enough for you, you can use a template to draw geometric patterns. You can find templates in stores that hold hobby materials (for painting, decoupage, etc.).

However, if possible, find it stencils with a sticky side because otherwise the paint may spill under the pattern, which happened in our case.

Templates are mostly used on horizontal surfaces, that is, on the floors. Of course, with a little more precision, it is possible to use them on wall surfaces as well.

We have found templates measuring 21 × 36, 25 × 25 to 45 × 45 centimeters, and prices range from 150 to 850 dinars per template. It is important that the template be well adhered to the ceramic surface so that the paint would not spill. This is needed VERY skilful hand.
