Owls – the best “collaborators” of farmers and victims of rodenticides

Big eyes, silent cruising in the sky and sharp claws – owls are predators specialized in catching rodents that cause trouble to farmers. However, in order to get rid of the pest, farmers use poisons without knowing that they are endangering the survival of their natural associates who, after eating a poisoned mouse, die for days or even weeks.

Only one owl can catch up to 12 mice per night, and as certain species hunt in groups, their efficiency is higher, experts for these birds say.

The Barn Owl Trust explains that rodenticides function as anticoagulants or prevent blood clotting. An owl that eats a newly poisoned mouse (which, unfortunately, often happens) enters the body with a lethal dose of poison, which then slowly and painfully kills it.

Therefore, every farmer, before reaching for rodenticides, should ask himself whether it is possible to attract owls to his property, which will be very happy to do the job of “night watchman” of crops.

You will not even know about the presence of these birds during the day because they are mostly active only at night, and all you need to do is provide them with a hidden place where they will nest and water that is always available to them. It is advisable, before you “employ” these predators, to plug the holes into which rodents can crawl and to place a seed feeder in the open yard that will serve as bait for rodents.
