Presentation of the poetry book Memories and hopes by Montserrat Barlam, this afternoon at the Library. After Of poetry and other experiences (2014), the poet from Martorell brings us a new book in which life explodes in all its magnitude: the land, the country, the struggle to overcome cancer, love and the immense desire to live coexist in a poems full of strength and love for others.
Barlam was accompanied on stage by the Josefina Canals Library and the Martorell poets Teresa Amat and Josep Díaz, the latter in charge of illustrating the cover of the book.
It presents a book with about sixty poems that deal with various topics, but all with a commanding vitality.
I have put all my heart into it and it has helped me a lot with my illness, getting a lot out of me and helping other people with my experiences.
How long has it taken to cook this new book?
When I finished the first one, I started writing something, but with the death of the brothers I was very touched and I was more than two years old that I was unable to write anything. Then, when I was sick, I thought that the way to go about it was to get everything I had and to write was a salvation for me.
The book contains some poems about disadvantaged people, with the spirit of always reaching out and helping them.
I always try to convey all the joy I have. Despite the evil I carry, I don’t want to cry, I pull ahead, I think it’s the beast or me, and I have to be stronger than her. I have the battle won, we all know that, but it will be hard for me to finish.
The book has a very elegant cover of the mountains of Montserrat. Where did the idea come from?
Josep Diaz paints and we asked him if one of his paintings could illustrate the cover of the book. He sent us many pictures and we chose this one. I am very happy and grateful.
The publication would not have been published without the collaboration of Jordi Raventós, his son, owner of the Adesiara publishing house. He also put his body and soul into it, didn’t he?
Yes, he has taken care of printing and publishing. But not in their publishing house, because they are dedicated to classic authors.
As a mother poet, son of a publisher?
It’s all in the family. He has been a very smart and hardworking guy. It touches a lot of feet on the ground. There is a poem in the book that I dedicated to him during the pandemic, when I couldn’t see him, and where I really explain what Jordi is like.
How do you write poems?
Sometimes they come out and sometimes they are anecdotes from life that happen to you. I pick them up and write them down as I see fit, not retouching them. If I get out in two minutes, the poem is done. I don’t care if it goes well or badly, but it’s what came out of it at the time.
It’s a nice, simple poem that reaches the reader…
Maybe yes. I have no great studies or experience, but my poems are written with the heart. What I can say is that I have a tremendous ability to rhyme and get the right word out.
Another charm of this book is that the money you raise is for charity.
The money from the sale of the book will go to Can Ruti Hospital for cancer research. I can’t save myself, but if there is someone who can live longer I will die very calm.
