Over 1 out of 10 Italians do not sleep well because of their partner

On the occasion of the most romantic party of the year, Emma – The Sleep Company, one of the fastest growing European companies in the production of sleep systems, investigated how important it is for Italians to sleep well, highlighting how couples from the Bel Paese they live the experience of sharing the bed at night and revealing curious attitudes and methods.

According to the research conducted by Emma, over half of the Italian respondents (54%) declare that they experience disturbed sleep, in fact almost a fifth of the respondents cannot spend two nights in a row without waking up and about a third faces a tiring rest at least 2 or 3 times in the same week.

Among the main causes of a poorly restful sleep are physical pains in the morning caused by incorrect positions taken during the night (36%), the difficulty in abandoning oneself in the arms of Morpheus due to the thoughts and tensions of the day (33%) and an old mattress that no longer fits personal needs (23%).

Finally, it is curious to note that for well over 1 in 10 Italians (13%), the main motivation for restless sleep is attributable to the attitudes that the partner assumes during the night. Both men and women confirm this, more than half of them (60%) have at least once been annoyed by their better half.

Snoring, stolen blankets, grumbling and smartphones under accusation

Although in most cases these are unconscious actions, some seem to have ways that make the other’s night rest really restless. If exactly half of the interviewees (50%) say that what bothers them most is the classic snoring and heavy breathing of others, there are other reasons as well. For example, many invade the part of the bed that is not theirs (39%), over a fifth are a blanket thief (26%) and 15% utter noises, snorts and irritating gibberish. Among the annoying ones, there are also technological and always connected partners who bring smartphones, tablets and PCs under the sheets, preventing the person of the heart from falling asleep quickly: as many as 1 Italian out of 10 (10%), mainly women and under 40.

The lucky ones who declare they are never bothered by their partner (39%), could however be the cause of the disorder themselves. Also in this case, the main accusation is that of being snorers (51%), but also of shaking the partner’s rest because one gets up too often to go to the bathroom or drink (25%). Finally, almost a fifth of Italians (19%) are reproached for making excessive movements in their sleep, to the point of hitting the other person.

Almost a fifth of Italians (19%) wake up their partner to stop their disturbance

To try to have a restful sleep, you are willing to do anything. Nearly a fifth of respondents (19%) opt for a direct method and wake up the lover whenever he starts snoring, grumbling or doing other desperate actions. Some try to beat their partner by running to bed before him, thus making sure to fall asleep first (8%); someone tries to be hypnotized by a book or mobile phone screen hoping to fall asleep quickly (8%); there are also those who are discouraged and look for another place in the house where they can sleep undisturbed (7%) – mainly men over 40 – and those who equip themselves with ear plugs and eye masks (4%).
