The European Commission has proposed that all 27 Member States impose more travel restrictions so as to counteract the spread of new strains of coronavirus.
At the same time, good movement of goods and workers must be ensured in the Community.
Even though Europe is in the midst of a vaccination campaign, the Commission is asking Member States to test as much as possible and impose a quarantine on travelers.
A new color has been added, in addition to those that delimit the green, yellow and red areas.
“The Commission recommends that action be taken in two directions. First, the Commission proposes to add a new color, namely dark red (cherry) to the color-coded map which is published weekly. This will reflect the high level of infections with the new variants of coronavirus and will be applied in areas where the 14-day notifications on the infection rate are higher than 500. So this is a new category, a new area with a new color. “dark red,” said Didier Reynders, the European Commissioner for Justice.
More than 400,000 European citizens have already died from the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. All non-essential travel is discouraged.
Furthermore, the Commission proposes that all citizens outside the Community bloc, who travel to the Member States, be tested on departure, arrival and required to be quarantined for 14 days.
