Northern Electricity Supply Company Limited (Nesco) has taken the initiative to replace ordinary electric meters with pre-paid meters. However, the common people of Rajshahi do not want this meter. Various social organizations in Rajshahi are also opposing it. They say that the economic condition of the people is already shaky during the Corona period. In this situation, it is difficult for people to bear the cost of installing pre-paid meters.
Nesco has started installation of five lakh smart pre-paid meters in Rajshahi, Natore and Sirajganj districts from October 8. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid officially inaugurated it on that day. At present, pre-paid meters are being installed at various places. But the anger among the common people is increasing day by day with this meter. After the inauguration, the social organization Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad held a human chain-assembly program in opposition to it on October 26. The organization also handed over a memorandum to State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid demanding cancellation of pre-paid meters. Copies were handed over to local administration officials, including Rajshahi City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Sadar MP Fazle Hossain Badshah.
According to the memorandum, there is no industrial factory in Rajshahi. There is no big source of human income. Only educational institutions and the economy of this agricultural region. Here Nesco is collecting ghost bills from customers every month without seeing the meter. But a slight gust of wind disconnects the electricity here. Electrical equipment is damaged due to short circuit here due to faulty power supply. There is no initiative to set up underground transmission lines. However, an initiative has been taken to introduce pre-paid meters to increase customer suffering. It further said that due to pre-paid meters, customers in Dhaka and Chittagong have suffered immensely. People in the area have been seen to be embarrassed to recharge their meters in vending machines. They have to wait for hours, even days, to recharge their meters. They demanded that this pre-paid meter should not be imposed on the people of Rajshahi.
The demand was also made at a meeting of Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad on Monday night. The meeting was held at the organization’s own office. It was presided over by the president of the organization. Liaquat Ali. Speaking – General Secretary. Jamaat Khan, Advisor Asaduzzaman Asad, Organizing Secretary Debashish Pramanik Debu, Heroic Freedom Fighter Dr. Abdul Mannan, former director of Rajshahi Industries and Merchants Association Harun-ur-Rashid, women leader Kalpana Roy, Selina Begum, lawyer Entazul Haque Babu, NAP leader Mustafizur Rahman Khan Alam, heroic freedom fighter Minhaj Uddin Mintu, teacher Alauddin Al-Azad, engineer Faruk Hossain , Former upazila chairman Sufia Hasan, KM Jobaid Hossain, lawyer Shafiqul Islam and others. From this meeting, Nesco was given a 15-day ultimatum to stop the installation of pre-paid meters. If the demand is not reflected in it, it is also decided to take action. The general secretary of the organization said. Jamaat Khan said Nesco was not taking any initiative to set up an underground transmission line in the city. The people of Rajshahi are not getting the service in the name of which Nesco has been formed. On the contrary, people have become restless due to ghostly bills, irregularities, corruption and magic of electricity. Meanwhile, Nesco has leaned towards pre-paid meters without noticing. But the people of Rajshahi do not keep the bill in arrears. This time Nesco has also earned six crore rupees. Even then, an initiative has been taken to install pre-paid meters by discarding all the meters of the customers. Because of this people will face financial and mental loss.
Organizing Secretary Debashish Pramanik Debu said that wherever pre-paid meters have been introduced, people’s suffering has increased. When gas came to Rajshahi, the houses of eminent persons were connected on priority basis. If the pre-paid meter is so good then it should be given to the house of those eminent persons first. Let them get the idea, then we ordinary people will take this meter. Not before that. Is agitating not to turn on pre-paid meters. But Nesco is not taking cognizance of the matter. They want to force the pre-paid meter.
