Optical products market fell 12.8 percent in 2020 – Media & Advertising

The value of sales of optical products in Portugal ended the year 2020 with an estimated reduction of 12.8 percent, as a result of the sharp drop in demand during the population’s confinement period and the deterioration of economic activity.

According to Informa’s DBK Sector Observatory, the value of the Portuguese optical products market had increased by 2.6 percent in 2019. The consultant estimates that the national market currently corresponds to 195 million euros.

The business structure shows a high degree of concentration of supply. The five largest companies in the sector in Portugal are responsible for a market share of 60.4 percent. The 10 largest companies have a share of 78.7 percent of the total national market.

Graduated lenses are the main segment of the sector, accounting for a 38.5 percent share of turnover, although sunglasses and contact lenses tend to gain weight in global sales.
