The pandemic that has affected millions of people around the world and that still has repercussions on us, all of us, highlights the risks that workers in different occupational categories have to face.
Beyond those who are part of the medical staff, who are at the forefront of the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and for whom we are grateful for their efforts, among the most vulnerable people are workers in food supply chains.
Whether it’s local farmers, workers on exotic fruit and vegetable plantations, courier cyclists transporting products of strict necessity to those in quarantine or sellers who come into direct contact with consumers, shops and markets agri-food, these people have proven – if necessary – that they are indispensable for our survival.
This year’s invitation is to reflect on the role of farmers and small producers in our food supply chains and the extent to which their work is valued at their true value.
Given the current context, Fair Trade Week takes place exclusively online to prevent and ensure the health of all participants.
Fair trade, a long-term move
The activity is part of the project Our Food. Our Future and is a continuation of the efforts we have made in the projects Make Fruit Fair, Trade Fair, Live Fair and in all other activities we have carried out independently or with the support of other entities, through which we have contributed to the global movement created around fair trade and Fairtrade certification.
The Mai Bine Association expresses its solidarity with agricultural workers around the world and contributes through awareness-raising and information activities to the creation of supply chains based on ethical and fair principles, with the help of consumer citizens who understand the need to uphold the fundamental rights of people and , at the same time, to improve the impact of food on the climate.
The project Our Food. Our Future is implemented in Romania by the association Better and is funded by the European Union. Our Food. Our Future is represented by a global consortium of 16 organizations from Europe, Brazil and South Africa and is coordinated by the Christliche Initiative Romero in Germany.
