OnePlus Nord 2 5G: “Flagship killer”!

THE OnePlus… has been bursting lately and after the OnePlus Nord CE 5G that we recently tested and presented to you, it continues its attack in the mid-range category with the successor of last year Nord, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G! Our company sent the device in its top version (12/256GB) for testing together with 3 wonderful hard cases in different colors so … let’s go see it!

Important: Note that you can now get all the OnePlus products from its official site at www.oneplus.com/gr and these will come to your door within a few 24 hours, at no extra cost, with their full 2 year warranty. In case anything happens under warranty, the company sends a courier to pick up the device from your place and within a few days, it has been repaired in one of its service centers in Europe and has returned to your hands, at no cost (enough, of course, the damage is covered by the warranty). OP is one of the first companies to actually promote such a sales model and so far it seems to work fine, so if you want one of its models, do not … be afraid of the online market!

Appearance and construction

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G is actually positioned a little higher than the Nord CE 5G and is more geared towards premium mid-rangers, despite the “center” of the category. In fact, we could characterize it as well flagship killer, based on its features, although it lacks a flagship chipset, this does not mean that it does not have very high performance. More on that later, though. Opening the box we find the mobile phone, the necessary forms, one silicone case, classic, red Type-C cable and a 65W Warp Charger, which is also one of the highlights of the model.

The Nord 2 5G maintains what is known Blue Haze color that is characteristic of the entire Nord series, but you can also get it in Gray Sierra, if you want. It is a relatively compact device with thickness 8.3 mm and length 158.9mm, while its weight is limited to 189 grams. Impressive, especially considering the existence Gorilla Glass 5 both front and rear, while the frame is plastic. The camera module protrudes slightly from the back, where the OP logo dominates in the center, while at the front we have normal size bezels with a screen-to-body ratio of 85% about. The selfie camera is located in a hole on the top-left and overall the smartphone is … slippery, so we recommend use of case and with the above.

As mentioned, in addition to the transparent silicone case, our company also sent 3 more cases, hard cases, a “discreet”, a “summer” and a more … “funky”, all with limestone finish which is extremely high quality to the touch and also offers the necessary grip.

Hardware, Software and performance

A flagship killer should have excellent screen, performance and camera. Starting with the first, we find one 6.43 “Fluid AMOLED panel with FullHD + resolution (1080×2400 pixels) and 20: 9 ratio, which has 90 Hz refresh rate and supports HDR10+. The refresh rate is lower than the flagships but you will hardly notice it anywhere, as few applications really use it (especially for games) and scrolling / browsing is already very “smooth” at 90Hz. The screen is well sized for one-handed use while in terms of brightness it does well, although its maximum brightness is lower than that of OP9, for example. Even so, it is still a Fluid AMOLED panel and that was what was wanted, while inside the fingerprint sensor is also hidden.

We continue with the performance. As we mentioned earlier, our device came with me 12GB RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage space, which does not expand. The other version is 8/128GB but before you choose it, think about whether you have enough space. All this is combined with a chipset MediaTek, the new Dimensity 1200 at 6nm, which offers very high performance for its class and 5G connectivity, at the same time. The most important thing, however, is that it definitely has better thermal behavior even from top Qualcomm chipsets (eg SD888) and the result is lower temperatures, minimal chances of overheating and an autonomy which is significantly larger even than OP9, for example. THE Mali-G77 MC9 GPU will meet your gaming needs and overall we were very satisfied with this h / w combo of Nord 2 5G. Indicatively we report a score close to 510,000 on the AnTuTu benchmark, which leaves no room for complaints.

The device is running Android 11 and of course will receive an update on Android 12 while the OxygenOS 11.3 it is fast, beautiful, very customizable and without much bloatware.

In terms of connectivity, apart from 5G, we have Wi-Fi 5 (dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, Hotspot), Bluetooth 5.2 (with A2DP, LE, aptxHD), NFC and a Type-C 2.0 port with OTG. Exactly what we expected from this model.

Camera, sound and autonomy

Let’s go to the photographic capabilities of the device. At the back we have one triple camera with 50MP main sensor, f / 1.9 aperture, 24mm focal depth, sensor size 1 / 1.56 “and 1.0μm pixel size, which offers very good quality photos and videos (4K at 30 FPS, 1080p at 60FPS and up to 240 FPS slo-mo). However, the “killer” features here are PDAF and OIS, which we do not find even in much more expensive models and will surely be much appreciated by the lovers of photography and video. The main sensor is completed by one 8MP with 119 degree ultra-wide lens but also a small, 2MP, monochrome sensor that helps in depth of field information but also increases the detail in the downloads. Overall, we really liked the camera for the device category and it will definitely over-cover the average user who is also an aspiring photographer.

As for the selfie camera, it has a large sensor 32MP with lens aperture f/2.5, which does not help much with night shots. However, there is Auto-HDR and gyro-EIS which will generally help your video calls and conference calls while the video touches 1080p at 30FPS.

The sound is loud and comes from two stereo speakers, one up and one down on the device. Thus, it offers several points in nmultimedia experience with Nord 2 5G, especially when watching video and gaming!

We close with the autonomy due to their battery 4.500mAh. We said, of course, that thanks to the Dimensity 1200 chipset, energy management The device is very good and so you will definitely have it 1-1.5 days of autonomy, in demanding conditions of use. The good thing, however, is that the 65W fast charging, which means that in 5 ‘you have enough energy for hours! In addition, the battery fills completely in 30 ‘ only, something we confirmed during our tests. To emphasize that it is also supported USB Power Delivery, so the Nord 2 5G can to recharge other wired devices, via its Type-C port, if desired.

Conclusion

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G It was a pleasant surprise for us as well as with honor € 399 for the 8 / 128GB version and € 499 for the 12 / 256GB, is an attractive, quality, powerful and all-around device that famously manages to meet our needs, as demanding users. It has a very good screen, Gorilla Glass front and rear, a very nice appearance, 65W charging and a powerful but non-energy consuming chipset, which will offer you the required performance for each app. The cameras are not top notch, of course, but they achieve very good image and video capture, with several modes available. We practically did not miss anything from the Nord 2 5G and we can say with confidence that it is in the top Value for Money devices in the category € 400-500, with very few models “standing” in front of him with claims. If nothing else, it easily wins a place on our list and your list, if you are ready for a new smartphone!
