Clashes broke out between supporters of an Awami League-backed and rebel councilor candidate at Pathantuli in Chittagong’s Double Mooring police station. One person was shot dead at that time. His name is Azgar Ali Babul (55). Another person who was shot in the incident is undergoing treatment.
The clash took place at Mogaltuli Magpukurpar area of Pathantuli ward around 8pm on Tuesday.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Double Mooring Police Station Sadeep Kumar Das said the clash took place between supporters of Awami League-backed councilor candidate Nazrul Islam Bahadur and supporters of rebel candidate Abdul Quader.
Azgar Ali was shot dead in the clash. He is a resident of Pathantuli area. Mahbub, who was shot in the clash, is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Abdul Quader alias Mach Quader Nagar, the last councilor of Ward No. 27, is known as a follower of AJM Nasir, the general secretary of Awami League. This time the party did not nominate him but nominated Bahadur.
Bahadur is a follower of Deputy Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel. Before Quader, he was the councilor of this ward from 2000 to 2014.
Nazrul Islam Bahadur, who has the support of Awami League, has claimed Babul and Mahbub as his cadres.
“I had public relations in that area today,” he said. I went to the election office of Rezaul Bhair (Awami League nominated mayoral candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury) through public relations, from there I was supposed to go to Nazirbhandar Lane. At the time, his followers led by Kader came and attacked.
The councilor candidate claimed that Babul and Mahbub were shot while trying to save him. Rebel candidate Abdul Quader could not be reached for comment.
City Police Deputy Commissioner (West) Farooq-ul-Haq said there was a clash between the two councilor candidates. There have been shootings. The situation is calm now. Additional police have been deployed in the area.
