About a hundred reports about the corona vaccine from Pfizer / BioNTech were received at the Lareb Side Effects Center in a week, the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) reports Thursday. Since last Wednesday, healthcare workers have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Most reports were of milder side effects, such as injection site reaction, fatigue, muscle pain and headache. Those side effects weren’t surprising either.
Two subjects developed a severe allergic reaction after receiving the vaccine. Both patients were “treated and recovered quickly and appropriately”.
It was already known from the clinical study that the vaccination can provoke allergic reactions in rare cases. “With the right medical treatment at your fingertips and under the right supervision, the reaction can be treated well,” says the MEB.
Manufacturer Pfizer advises to keep an eye on people for 15 minutes after the shot so that allergic reactions can be treated immediately if they occur.
First vaccinations by proportion of health personnel
In the first phase of the vaccination program, the corona pricks are only administered to some of the healthcare personnel in the Netherlands. Next week residents of nursing homes and people in care for the disabled will also be vaccinated.
In acute care, some 38,500 employees have been vaccinated so far. It is not clear exactly how many employees of nursing homes and institutions for people with a disability have now been vaccinated.
The reports that Lareb registers on behalf of the MEB, together with reports from other EU countries, are collected in the adverse reactions database of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). In addition, the manufacturer must submit a safety report to the EMA every month.
