On average, Germans use 31 smartphone apps

According to a recent Bitkom survey, the number of apps that German smartphone users have installed on their devices has increased significantly.

German smartphone owners are using more and more apps on their devices. According to a current Bitkom study, there are currently an average of 31 apps on privately used smartphones – in addition to the pre-installed applications. For comparison: In the previous year this figure was 25 – an increase of 24 percent.

In the group of 16 to 29 year olds, 42 apps are used on average. The number of installed apps decreases with increasing age, with the over 65 year olds having an average of 19, not even half as many as among the younger ones.

However, only 8 percent of smartphone users have fewer than 10 apps installed on their smartphone. 17 percent use 10 to 20, 20 percent use 20 to 30, and 22 percent use 30 to 50 apps. The group of those who have more than 50 apps on their smartphone has grown significantly (2023: 22 percent, 2022: 16 percent).

“The range of apps has developed rapidly in recent years. Apps have gained in importance in the banking and finance sectors in particular, but also in mobility and in the areas of health, entertainment and shopping,” says Bitkom CEO Bernhard Rohleder.

Especially during the corona pandemic, the app market in Germany once again grew enormously. Last year, apps for smartphones and tablets generated record sales of 3.4 billion euros – an increase of 12 percent compared to 2021 and more than doubling compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, when 1.6 billion euros were implemented. Sales will continue to be at a very high level this year at an expected EUR 3.3 billion.
