Often considered the same, this is the difference between Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis

Suara.com – Porous bone problems such as osteoporosis, for example, are often experienced by older adults to young adults. Although often considered the same, it turns out that there is a difference between Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis.

The problem with Osteoporosis refers more to porous bones, so the impact can cause fractures. While Osteoarthritis is caused by joint inflammation caused by stiffness and pain.

“Lay people sometimes equate perceptions about Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis. Even though the two are very different,” said the Orthopedic Specialist, dr. Anita Kurniawati Sp.OT, in the webinar ‘Knowing Osteoporosis from an Early Age’, Tuesday (28/12/2021).

“Osteoporosis occurs when there is bone loss. Even asymptomatic and no pain or complaints. However, symptoms can appear if the bone is broken,” he continued.

As for Osteoarthritis, dr. Anita revealed that it happened because there was calcification of the joints, joint pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints. These symptoms usually come on gradually. However, the symptoms can be felt in the morning, when the joints have not moved for a long time.

“The real symptom is Osteoarthritis. Usually there is pain in the joints, there is swelling, and there is stiffness when you wake up. Even the pain occurs in the knees and hips,” continued dr. Anita.

“So we need to differentiate, that one is in bone loss, and the other is leading to calcification of the joints,” he said.

Further, dr. Anita said the risk factors for Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis are very different. However, this problem is more common in women than men.

“Women experience both more often. But fortunately, in terms of joint calcification in Osteoarthritis, it occurs in people with obesity. But if you have osteoporosis, everyone can get bone loss,” he said.

“When you have osteoarthritis, it usually occurs due to overuse, such as standing up a lot, walking up and down stairs. But if you have osteoporosis, it actually occurs due to lack of physical activity or lack of exercise,” added dr. Anita.
