On Thursday evening, the Tunisian official magazine issued a presidential order freezing the work of the House of Representatives and lifting the immunity of its members, in a move that Saied’s opponents described as a coup.

The first item of the text of the order published in the official magazine stated that “all the competencies of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People are suspended for a period of one month, starting from July 25, with the possibility of extending the said period by virtue of a presidential order, as stipulated in Chapter (Article) 80 of the Constitution”.

While the second clause of it stipulates that “the parliamentary immunity of all members of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People shall be lifted for the duration of the suspension of its work.”

While the third item stipulated “assigning the Parliament’s Secretary General to conduct the administrative and financial work of the Legislative Council.”

On Monday, Said issued a presidential order relieving Prime Minister Hisham Al-Mashishi, who was also acting as the Minister of the Interior, Ibrahim Al-Bartajy, Minister of National Defense, and Hasna Ben Suleiman, Minister to the Prime Minister in charge of the public service and the Acting Minister of Justice, from their duties.
