Prague – The opposition bloc ODS, KDU-ČSL and TOP 09, which formed a coalition for this year’s parliamentary elections, wants to convene an extraordinary meeting of the lower house in January to propose the introduction of a correspondence election and a compensation law. At the same time, the parties want to include a vaccination strategy as the first point of the regular meeting of the Chamber of Deputies, which will begin next Tuesday. The party chairmen said this at today’s press conference in the Chamber of Deputies.
The opposition also wants to discuss the proposal to introduce a correspondence election for Czech citizens living abroad in response to the fact that President Miloš Zeman announced the date of the October parliamentary elections, as usual, in December. The drafters of the draft include the three parties mentioned, Pirates and STAN. “Within the European Union, we are one of the last states that does not allow its citizens a choice of correspondence,” said Markéta Pekarová Adamová, President of TOP 09 According to her, there are tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of people.
Compensation law was submitted by deputies TOP 09, ODS, KDU-ČSL and STAN. According to the draft, the state should pay entrepreneurs the full amount of fixed costs if they had to stop their activities completely due to government measures. In the event of a reduction in activity, half of the fixed costs would be reimbursed. These include rents, loan and lease payments, energy, insurance and maintenance, servicing or storage of fixed assets, as well as other necessary operating expenses. The ANO and CSSD minority government opposed the draft.
People’s Chairman Marian Jurečka pointed out that over 169,000 doses of covid-19 vaccine have already arrived in the Czech Republic from Pfizer, but an estimated 70,000 to 75,000 people have been vaccinated so far. After visiting the vaccination center in Brno, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) said today that 61,474 people had been officially reported from the vaccination centers. “At the beginning of the meeting next week, we want to ask the government for information on what the vaccination strategy is in terms of the course so far, but also plans for the coming weeks and months,” he said.
According to him, the Czechia cannot do without specialized vaccination centers. Municipal politicians are ready for maximum cooperation, but the government must give a clear framework and help secure everything financially and materially, says Jurečka. The cabinet must include as much as possible in the complex operation, especially general practitioners or objectively inform about the effects of vaccination, he added. He called on the government to act together.
