NVIDIA Lovelace is not meant for the poor: powerful but expensive?

It is becoming clear that we will not normally buy a new graphics card for the recommended price for a long time. NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang himself recently said that the shortage in the market will continue, and will affect most of next year, an assumption that certainly does not stand alone and is more of a consensus.

NVIDIA should introduce the new generation (Ada) Lovelace in about a year, which simply means that the state of significantly prevailing demand over supply will mark practically the entire era of the Ampere generation, and in this climate a new generation should emerge, which should be much more efficient than today. Can NVIDIA be expected to offer prices comparable to the recommended amounts of today’s Amps?

Not only according to the information provided by leaker Greymon55 (via HardwareTimes), we have to expect a huge increase in performance, even roughly double today’s RTX 3090. The upcoming AD102 chips should have up to 144 SMs in a total of 12 GPC, which on the same measures would in itself represent an increase in gross power by 71% to 66 TFLOPS. The rest can be provided by higher cycles achieved thanks to the TSMC N5 process and changes in architecture.

But it will also cost something, namely more energy, and there are reports from well-known leakers that we should even count on up to 500W of heat output, which already raises a number of questions and doubts. It is no longer just a half-klowatt heater to operate, and it is clear that the resulting graphics card would have to be huge if it had to rely on air cooling, and today’s generation cards are so large that it can be a problem to cram them into larger cabinets. From the consumption, the scarecrow of luxury goods looks at us, which will not be just for someone.

It is also no wonder that price estimates are already appearing, such as the following amounts from Graphically Challenged.
  • RTX 4090 – $2,999
  • RTX 4080 Ti – $1,999 (late release)
  • RTX 4080 – $1,199
  • RTX 4070 – $799
  • RTX 4060 Ti – $ 499
  • RTX 4060 – $399
  • RTX 4050 Ti – $ 329
  • RTX 4050 – $279

So the “folk” or gaming hi-end in the form of RTX 4080 would rise in price compared to its predecessor by $ 500 to 1,200 and the price of a real hi-end could immediately double. And precisely given the circumstances, ie the expected increase in performance combined with the lack and willingness of people to buy even overpriced cards, it can be said that NVIDIA could really demand so much and the worst part is that even then we could not expect to sell cards for really recommended prices. But we’ll see how it turns out.
