Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the militants are not only being cracked down on but also being brought back to normal life through de-radicalization.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a function titled “On the Path to New Horizons” on the occasion of the surrender of nine militants at the RAB headquarters in the capital on Thursday (January 14) at 12 noon.
Among the militants who surrendered were six members of the JMB and three members of Ansar al-Islam.
“We are not only cracking down on militancy, but also trying to bring them back to normal life through de-radicalization,” he said. Those returning to normal life are being provided with tractors, agricultural implements, cash assistance.
Noting that Bangladesh never harbors militancy, he said the Prime Minister had declared zero tolerance. This is not to say that we have eradicated militancy. I have said that we have been able to control militancy. I have been asked from many countries, how do you deal with militancy? I have said that we have been able to control militancy because the people of Bangladesh have never supported militancy.
We were all worried when one militant after another emerged. At that time, the Prime Minister called upon all the farmers, workers and teachers of the country, irrespective of their religion, to turn around. At the call of the Prime Minister, everyone turned around, there were human chains, there were rallies against militancy. The students of the school also hung placards around their necks saying they do not support militancy.
He said he saw the killing of a priest at a Hindu Iskcon temple in Panchagarh, the killing of a Buddhist priest, and the shooting of an imam while he was praying at a Shia mosque. Now that situation has changed. In particular, RAB has played a leading role in this regard. Today this surrender ceremony is his reflection.
Regarding the surrender of nine militants, the minister said, “Those who were confused, lost, those who took the wrong ideology in the wrong way have returned to their parents today, smiled at their parents, which I will see many days later.” I thank RAB for this, this effort will continue.
Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan assured Kamal that he would return to normal life with a bouquet of flowers. At that time, the minister handed over the nine returnees to their guardians and assisted in their rehabilitation.
