Florence. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is seriously finding his Olympic form.
On Thursday, the 20-year-old Norwegian runner showed new tests of his great talent when he set a new European record in the 5000 meters at a Diamond League competition in Florence.
Ingebrigtsen crushed all opposition and finished in 12 minutes and 48.45 seconds. It is 1.26 seconds faster than Belgian Mohammed Mourhit’s now previous European record, which he has otherwise held for 21 years.
Ingebrigtsen’s time was also a significant improvement on the Norwegian’s personal record and the fastest time, which has been set at 5000 meters this year.
– It’s fantastic. It is very hard work that lies behind. It is my first 5000 meters in two years, so I did not quite know how I would manage it, but at the same time I have run very fast in training, says Jakob Ingebrigtsen to NRK according to the news agency NTB.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen beat, among others, Joshua Cheptegei at the Diamond League tournament on Thursday. Cheptegei set a new world record of 5,000 meters last year with a time of 12 minutes and 35.36 seconds.
But even though the Norwegian was flying at 5000 meters on Thursday, right now he has no plans to run that distance at the Olympics. Ingebrigtsen will instead focus on 1500 meters.
– It would be fun to run them both, but it seems to be only 1500 meters, he says to NRK.
The Olympics take place from July 23 to August 8.
